GSA – GSA.gov
 THE OBJECTIVE

To create a citizen-centric Web site to provide the public with easy, one-stop access to all GSA organizations, services, and information. The original GSA.gov site matched GSA's organizational structure and GSA maintained a vast quantity of information from all of its agencies across more than 40 distinct Web sites. Each site had its own look and feel, creating inconsistent brand associations for the organization. GSA's objective was to create a single, citizen-centric portal for GSA without centralizing content management.

 THE SOLUTION

GSA's CIO staff and Aquilent worked closely together to:

  • Develop a citizen-centric information architecture with information categorized by topic, rather than according to organizational boundaries
  • Redesign the site to provide single agency portal to search all GSA divisions and to provide consistent look and fee
  • Unify the content management process and technology set to allow numerous GSA divisions to manage their own services and information

The GSA portal maintains the following two components, which integrate seamlessly from the user's perspective:

  • Content managed centrally via Oracle database and served dynamically via Section 508-compliant JSP templates
  • Content managed externally served up via dynamically-generated full-text search indexes
 THE PAYOFF

GSA.gov provides a single portal to achieve the following goals:

  • Facilitate search-and-retrieval for citizens
  • Create consistent look and feel for all GSA online content
  • Allow GSA divisions to manage their own services and information
  • Improve navigation
