NPS Tests Aquilent-designed NEPA Compliance System / 06.03.03

Solution provides model for agencies required to comply with NEPA

LAUREL, MD - Aquilent, a leading provider of E-Government and IT consulting services for government clients, recently delivered a Web-based, collaborative system to the National Park Service (NPS) to facilitate conservation planning, environmental impact analysis, and informed decision making. The system was developed in compliance with the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA). Aquilent provided the professional IT services and project management to develop and integrate this complete web-based solution. In preparation for a July release of this system within the National Park Service, Aquilent has recently supported a Beta Test of the system with 14 Park Service offices nationwide.

The National Park Service must comply with NEPA, which requires federal agencies to involve the interested and affected public when making decisions impacting the environment. The web-based Planning, Environment, and Public Comment (PEPC) system ensures that environmental information is available to public officials and citizens, and that accurate scientific analysis, expert agency comments, and pubic scrutiny are gathered before decisions are made and actions taken. This solution uses Internet technologies to support project planning, compliance tracking, comment analysis and response, as well as public communication efforts. Key benefits are:

  • Improving management and planning of projects

  • Increasing efficiency of compliance

  • Fostering better relationships with constituents

"We are excited about the upcoming release of the PEPC system. This system in conjunction with our re-engineered compliance process will foster public comment on National Park Service projects, while at the same time reducing cost and improving the efficiency and effectiveness of our NEPA compliance efforts," said Jacob Hoogland, Chief of the National Park Service's Environmental Quality Division. "The PEPC system helps improve our overall management of park projects, assists our staff to manage the compliance process, and ensures that public comment is included as a critical and important part of our process."
