The "2006 National Environmental Excellence Award" awarded to Aquilent System Developed for the National Park Service
LAUREL , MD , April 14, 2006– The National Association of Environmental Professionals (NAEP) honored the National Park Service (NPS) with the 2006 National Environmental Excellence Award in the Best Available Environmental Technology Category. NPS was selected for the award for the development and implementation of the Planning, Environment, and Public Comment System (PEPC system) for its significant achievement and demonstrated success in receiving and addressing hundreds of thousands of public comments.
Aquilent partnered with the National Park Service to design a Web-based tool to make environmental information easily accessible to public officials and citizens to allow public participation in the decision-making process. Aquilent developed the PEPC system, a collaborative, Web-based tool designed to facilitate NEPA compliance in the areas of conservation planning, environmental impact analysis, and informed decision-making.
PEPC received the award with the following citation:
“While web based programs are not unique and are an essential part of daily government, the development of this tool by Aquilent experts, the improvement in broad compliance, application of the innovative technology to reduce project delays, and increase environmental analysis of projects… demonstrates significant national environmental excellence…,” Jim Melton, NAEP Awards Chair and Board of Directors..
“Aquilent has been fortunate to work with a visionary like NPS's Jake Hoogland to develop PEPC,” stated David Fout, Aquilent's President and CEO. “We congratulate NPS, Jake, and the PEPC team on receiving this award and the great results they have achieved.”
PEPC has resulted in many benefits to NPS and the public to include reduced project delays, increased environmental analysis and compliance efficiency, improved communication with the public, and increased efficiency in receiving and addressing numerous public comments.
